College Homecoming: The Event of the Year

College Homecoming is an annual tradition for United States colleges and universities which usually takes place in late September or October and brings thousands of alumni, students and fans together. The purpose of College Homecoming is to welcome back former residents and alumni, and is built around a main event, such as a football game, basketball game, or an ice hockey game, in addition to various activities that take place during that week.

The activities during College Homecoming week vary widely depending on the college or university. However, College Homecoming week usually consists of a football game, activities for students and alumni, a parade featuring the school's marching band or floats, and a Homecoming Queen and King. The annual Homecoming football game is usually regarded as one of the biggest games of the year for the college or university, and is often against the school s rival.

In addition to the game, the Homecoming Court, usually consists of seniors, is introduced and the marching band performs. Classmates will nominate students who have gone above and beyond contributing to their school, or students will usually vote for the most attractive girl and boy to be their queen and king. Once the Homecoming Court candidates are announced, the entire student body votes for the Queen and King by a secret ballot. The Homecoming Queen and King are usually announced at the College Homecoming football game. Homecoming court members who are not crowned king or queen are often called escorts.

Many Homecoming celebrations include a parade. The parade includes the school's marching band and different college and university organizations. In addition, the Homecoming Court takes part in the parade.

Moreover, many schools hold a pep rally during Homecoming week, one or more nights before the game. The events during the pep rally vary per school, but may include skits, games, introduction of the homecoming court and comments from the football players and coach about the upcoming game.

Lastly, some colleges and universities have a Homecoming Dance. The Homecoming Dance is a formal or semiformal event, held at the college or university or an off-campus location. The venue is decorated usually with a theme, and a disc jockey or a band is hired to play music. During the dance, the Homecoming Queen and Homecoming King have at least one slow dance together, and then are free to dance with their dates.
