Health Careers on the Rise in 2010

Health Care jobs in the United States are more in demand now than ever.  With some people calling this profession "recession proof," there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the need for health professionals will continue to rise throughout 2010 and beyond.  Students should take advantage of obtaining a health care degree to help advance in the Medical fields listed below:

1. Medical Assistants: These healthcare assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of various health practitioners running smoothly. According to the U.S. Bureau of labor statistics in 2008, median salary in this profession was $28,300.00 while the highest percentage had a salary of $39,570.00. Employment in this field is projected to grow much faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the 2008–2018 decade.  Earning a medical assistant certificate or degree typically takes 1-2 years and will give you a competitive edge among other Medical Assistant professionals.

2. Registered Nurses: RNs are known to both treat and educate patients about medical conditions.  They are also there to not only physically help patients, but also mentally care for them by providing advice and emotional support to both the patients and their family and friends.  RNs also have the job of recording patients medical histories and symptoms when they first get to the doctors office or hospital and are with them all the way until the follow-up period. According to the U.S. Bureau of labor statistics in 2008, Registered Nurses constitute the largest healthcare occupation with 2.6 million jobs.  Job opportunity and outlook is still expected to be excellent throughout 2010 and beyond.  The median annual salary of registered nurses was $62,450 in May 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of labor statistics, with the highest percentage earned more than $92,240.  To become an RN, you can either obtain a diploma or certificate from a nursing program, an associate degree or a bachelor degree.

3. Physical Therapist Aides: PT Aides work under the direct supervision of a physical therapist or a physical therapist assistant.  They are responsible for keeping the area organized, preparing for each patients therapy, assisting in transporting patients from one area to another and even some clerical tasks. According to the U.S. Bureau of statistics in 2008, Median annual wages of physical therapist aides were $23,760 while the highest percent earned more than $33,540.  While you can sometimes learn skills on the job, this profession is extremely competitive and usually has a large group of qualified applicants applying for open positions. Earning a certificate or degree to be a Physical Therapist Aide will help you stand out against other applicants.
