This specialization offers a rigorous foundation of courses in Counseling Psychology—an interventional approach to psychology that focuses on assessing and building on clients' strengths.  Delve into topics such as counseling theory, individual and group counseling interventions, testing and assessment, research methods and counseling diagnosis.  Successful graduates of this program often pursue counseling, research or employee assistance positions in a social services, business, health care or educational setting; or they are preparing for their doctoral studies in Counseling Psychology.

With this specialization, you will learn how to:  counsel clients using proper application of scientifically-based psychological theories; apply counseling psychology theory and research in interventions and decision making; apply ethical principles in practice and research; assess clients’ strengths and weaknesses through psychological testing; effectively communicate psychological concepts.  This specialization may be a good first step for those who wish to pursue a PsyD or PhD, which is generally required for licensure as a counseling psychologist.
