A marketer understands consumer behavior, target markets and competitors in order to create and distribute new products, innovative services, and contemporary ideas. Marketing, with its emphasis on the acquisition and retention of customers, is demanded by global conglomerates, local business firms, manufacturers, retailers, schools, non-profit enterprises, and government agencies. The marketing profession is varied and spans many options, from careers demanding creativity and innovation to those requiring skill in research and statistical analysis. Career opportunities, including professional selling, advertising, public relations, and marketing research can be found in domestic and international markets. Contemporary firms are marketing oriented, and many organizations consider marketing to be an essential business skill, one that supplements other professions and disciplines. The Chancellor University Marketing Department encourages students to register for MK 423, an internship course in marketing as part of the course electives. It is essential for marketing students to gain real-world experience and to develop a professional network of marketing contacts. We also encourage marketing students to join student clubs and associations, especially the American Marketing Association.
