College adds summer master's degree program for biology teachers

A college in Missouri has announced that it will begin offering a master's degree program that is specifically designed for working biology teachers.

According to the university's website, the courses will be available during alternating years, beginning in 2011. The two-year program will consist of two summer sessions - three weeks each - on campus, and the remaining coursework may be completed online.

The school's assistant dean of the arts and sciences department said that the program facilitates interaction among students, which allows professionals in the field to share their classroom practices.

The college's faculty will integrate their own research into the curriculum in order to educate teachers about the latest breakthroughs in science. For example, one professor said that her discoveries about the H1N1 epidemic last year served as relevant classroom material.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that some U.S. states require that all teachers have a master's degree. The completion of a graduate program often results in a raise in pay for educators.

The bureau says that professionals in this field should be able to inspire confidence and motivate their students by employing different teaching methods. They should also be organized, patient and creative.
