Medical and Insurance Coders are a central and significant part of healthcare today. They work in an array of healthcare settings including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, physician offices, clinics, home healthcare agencies, extended care facilities, etc. A fundamental understanding and knowledge of coding skills in the assignment of appropriate ICD-9CM, CPT and HCPCS codes is critical in the healthcare setting as medical coders and billers use their skills to assign and sequence the correct diagnosis and procedure codes for healthcare services. Competencies of data identification, coding guidelines, regulatory guidelines, coding and data quality are addressed and reviewed to ensure the student has the required skills and foundation to perform his/her job responsibilities as a coder.
