Eye Problems Among College Students

With everything that college throws at you (studying, exams, classes you don’t want, classes you do want but can’t get into), why does bad vision have to be one of them? Between pulling all-nighters, cramming for exams, and staring at a computer screen for hours on end, eye problems are just one more thing that college students have to deal with.

Computer Vision Syndrome
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), brought to light by the American Optometric Association, is a temporary condition that can result after focusing on a computer display for long, uninterrupted periods of time.  Symptoms of CVS can include headaches, blurred vision, pain in the neck and shoulders, and dry eyes. Does that sound like you or someone you know? These symptoms may be alleviated with the use of better lighting, better seating, eliminating computer glare, having the correct distance between you and your computer, using eye drops to moisten your eyes, and taking frequent breaks.

Red Eye
Red Eye is usually caused by tiredness or eyestrain, and relief can be found by getting more sleep and replacing your lighting. On the other hand, Red Eye can also mean you have conjunctivitis, at which point it is actually called Pink Eye. Pink Eye is contagious and should be treated. There is also the possibility of allergies, a cold coming on, or poor contact lens hygiene.

Having Bad Eyesight is Not the End of the World
Really, it’s not. Whether your eye problems are genetic (and have so far been undetected) or whether they are due to age, it is time for an eye exam.  Eye exams are simple, they are usually covered by insurance, and they often take less than 10 minutes.

Glasses are Way-Cool
If you choose to wear glasses then you are in luck because glasses have become THE new fashion statement. People of all ages are wearing glasses whether they need them or not because today’s glasses come in many shapes, styles and colors. Gone are the days of purchasing just one pair for everyday use.  You can now buy a pair of glasses online for so cheap that you can buy several pairs to match different outfits, moods, and social settings.

Keep in mind that while you can deal with classes, handle exams and put up with boring instructors, your eyesight should not be ignored. Take steps to eliminate problems and take care of your eyes. We only get one pair, after all.

It’s a good schedule on multiple fronts: Tough enough to get the point across — and possibly even to absolve an early loss against FSU, Missouri or Texas — but not too brutal to emerge

I have gotten the computer vision syndrome before. I read somewhere that you should look away for a couple of seconds at something far away to adjust your eyes. This doesn't just happen to me with computers, it also happens sometimes when I read books for a long time, especially in dim lighting.

This is very common. I was actually told by my eye doctor to lose the computers all together if i wanted to save my eyesight. Thats not really an option and there has to be another way of not hurting your eyes.

When you’re in college you are glued to your desktop or laptop. Though I have not gone to an eye doctor I can tell my vision is different because of all the late night papers and studying on my laptop. I also work full time in front of a computer screen which has not helped my eyes. My sight becomes blurry and tired a lot. It is really uncomfortable. Computer companies should help with this and make the screens better on the eyes. The only thing that I see that is helpful out there is anti-glare glasses and anti-glare screen protectors. These products usually cost a lot of money. It would be nice if these things came with your computer purchase.
