Higher Education Leads to True Love?

In a report that may leave some of you scratching your heads in disbelief, it appears that getting a college degree will not only help you earn a higher wage, but also may help you find true love. Although the marriage rate in the United States has seen a sharp decline over the past 50 years, that decline is reportedly less in people who have college degrees.

Overall, only 51 percent of Americans are married these days, compared to 72 percent back in 1960. A closer look at the results shows that 64 percent of Americans with a college degree are married today, compared to 76 percent fifty years ago. So, while fewer people are getting married today than before, the sharpest decline appears to be in people who do not have a college degree.

More people today believe that marriage is becoming obsolete, but the majority of people who are not married still say they wish to be. If this study, published by the reliable Pew Research Center, is to be believed, perhaps all they need to do is pursue a higher education.

The study also notes that younger Americans are seeing the sharpest drop in marriage rates, with a mere 20 percent of Americans aged 18-29 getting married now, compared to 59 percent in 1960. Perhaps this difference accounts for most of the decline in marriage rates. Since younger people may not have had time to complete their college degree, this may have some part in explaining the sharp decline from 1960 to today.

Whatever the reason for the decline, it is hard to doubt the results from a reputable research group such as Pew, and the numbers seem to speak for themselves.

It is well established that those with a college degree have the opportunity to earn higher salaries, but this may be the first many of us have heard of a college education helping Cupid hit his mark.

For those of you who have been looking for love, that doesn't mean you need to quit your job and return to school to find it, but pursuing an online college degree may not be such a bad idea. If you have been putting off going to college, this may be just the nudge you need to get started on achieving higher education.

What do you guys think? Sound off!
