An Honest Day’s Work For An Honest Day’s Pay
While manufacturing may have all but gone the way of the dinosaur within North America, local trades are still an exceptional source of income for many Americans and their families. Carpenters, plumbers, electricians, construction workers, welders and all manner of skilled labor are still viable routes to the realization of the American dream. The job security in these fields is high as the work performed cannot be outsourced to other locations, and the need for skilled laborers is always in line with population growth.
Another field that has seen rising salaries over the last decade is automotive repair. No longer does being a mechanic mean having the ability to work on anything with four wheels. Today's automotive technicians are well versed in the particular automotive systems of their chosen area of specialization, often tied to and sponsored by the brand of auto or diesel they repair. Engines, transmissions, fuel systems, electronics and the diagnostic equipment used to repair them are moving toward exclusivity within manufacturer sales and maintenance facilities, which has presented greater opportunities for employment and income growth in the industry.
In an age where the value of an education can't be overstated, the above fields represent an exceptional academic value. Most of the training and certification programs for skilled labor positions involve an educational investment of less than two years. For those who may be wary of committing to four years or more of college, these choices represent a more reasonable return on investment for their time and money. With many skilled labor salaries reaching levels commensurate with those earned by bachelor degree holders with several years of experience, skilled labor certifications are gaining popularity with high school graduates across the country.
