A community college in California has launched a new program that offers entry-level classes in nanotechnology.

The San Bernardino County Sun reports that the college recently started hosting free training sessions for individuals who are interested in the science of manipulating matter at an atomic or molecular level. A college official said the main goal of the program is to create a pipeline of workers who have the skills necessary to work in a growing field.

Some of the key uses of nanotechnology are to develop new cancer treatments and to create more eco-friendly sources of energy, according to the news provider.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that jobs in the scientific research and development fields will grow by 25 percent over the next eight years. The organization reports that an increased demand for medical and pharmaceutical advances will contribute to the need for more professionals in this field.

The BLS states that a bachelor's degree is required for most entry-level positions in the scientific research and development industry. Individuals who seek an introduction to this field may consider taking online courses.
