An Alaska-based college is adding a new degree program in order to keep up with a growing demand for drafters.
According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the state of Alaska Department of Labor predicts a 20 percent increase in drafting technology professionals over a decade. In response, the technical college will offer an applied science degree that will prepare students in architecture, engineering and construction.
Alaska's demand for drafters is higher than the average national projections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that employment opportunities within the field will grow by 4 percent in a decade, although the numbers vary by specialty.
"Increases in overall construction activity stemming from U.S. population growth and the related need to improve the nation’s infrastructure should spur demand for drafters trained in architectural and civil design," the BLS reported.
The BLS also said that aspiring drafters with at least two years of college training are more likely to land a job. Those who are interested in the field may consider taking online college courses to improve their candidacy.
