A Florida-based college has announced that it will hold information sessions about its three new bachelor's degree programs this week. The college recently received approval to add human services, digital media and biology undergraduate specialities to its curriculum.

According to TCPalm.com, the school will launch the new programs in January in order to meet the region's growing demand for professionals in these fields. The human services degree aims to prepare students for counseling and social services for children, families and senior citizens.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a bachelor's degree is required by most employers of social workers. Job opportunities in this field are projected to increase by 16 percent over a decade, which is faster than the average rate for all occupations. According to the BLS, the aging baby boomer generation will create a higher demand for elderly care professionals.

Social workers are expected to assist in finding the best care for senior citizens, as well as provide support to their families. The bureau reports that professionals with an understanding of gerontology, which is the social, psychological and biological study of aging, will be strong candidates to work at assisted-living and senior-living communities.

According to the most recent BLS data, the median salary for social workers is $39,530 per year. Students who are interested in this field may consider taking online courses, which can offer an introduction to the vast practices of improving people's lives.
