A university in Oklahoma recently became one of only a handful of U.S. colleges to offer an undergraduate degree in military history.

School officials said that the bachelor's degree program is not solely intended for students who want a career in the military, the Tulsa World reports. A professor in the school's history department said the degree will prepare students for a variety of roles, much like a general liberal arts degree, but it can specifically help individuals who wish to work for a government agency.

The news provider reports that the school's new program has attracted interest from local and out-of-state students.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the majority of professional historians conduct research and analysis for the government. Many individuals who earn a bachelor's degree in history pursue a career as a teacher, according to the BLS.

The bureau projects that employment opportunities for in this field will grow by 11 percent over a decade. Historians possess a broad knowledge in writing, research and coherent thinking, which can lead to a career in a wide-range of industries.

Many online colleges offer accredited degree programs in this field, which may help working-aged adults pursue a new career in their free time.
