Digital technology degree can lead to career in entertainment industry

The entertainment industry is one of the most competitive fields for actors, writers and directors, but there are other prospects for those who are well-versed in digital technology.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the field offers vast opportunities in post-production services on projects such as feature films, music videos and commercials. Although most movies are shot on film, digital technology and computer-generated imaging are more prevalent as Hollywood keeps a pulse on the latest innovations.

Universities and online college courses are beginning to offer more degrees geared to digital technology. For instance, a Wisconsin-based institute is awarding associate degrees to its first batch of media systems technology students.

The BLS reports that unusual hours are common in the motion picture and video industries and finding full-time work isn't easy. According to the most recent data, workers in the field averaged approximately 30 hours per week.

There are many small production companies throughout the country, so freelance opportunities are available for those who cannot find full-time work. However, individuals who have earned campus-based or online college degrees may be more likely to gain the attention of employers.
