As a result of natural disasters such as the recent earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, the demand for medical professionals who have been trained in campus-based or online degree programs is expected to grow.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry will create more jobs than any other sector over the next eight years. Consequently, individuals who have earned a general nursing degree could experience excellent career prospects.

Graduates of these degree programs will have the opportunity to help others wherever they land their first jobs. Typically, registered nurses (RNs) begin their careers in hospitals, doctors' offices or immunization clinics.

However, recent natural disasters have increased the need for nurses who are able to work in nontraditional environments. As a result, individuals who receive their nursing license RN will have a wide variety of prospective careers.

This need has already inspired some individuals, such as single mother and Vietnam veteran Pat Rice, to return to school in order to gain the skills they will need to help disaster-stricken areas recover, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Rice told the media outlet that she plans to go on a church mission to help victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti after she earns her degree.
