Individuals who have already earned a nursing license RN may believe that they do not need to pursue a college degree, as they are in the middle of their careers. However, statistics have shown that nurses who have earned at least a bachelor's degree are more likely to land high-paying positions.

Over the past few years, many campus-based and online schools have created degree programs that are intended to help working nurses update their educational qualifications. Because these programs may be completed whenever a student can find time, working adults can use them to earn a degree or certification without stunting their career development.

An Indiana-based university is one example of schools that recently launched this type of program, as school officials have opened the application process for an online bachelor's program for RNs. This course of study offers classes in an eight-week module format, which could enable enrollees to earn a degree in as few as 12 months.

Similar programs could enable working RNs to qualify for jobs that typically require a bachelor's degree. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these include administrative, educational, research and consulting positions.
