An Illinois college recently announced that it is has revamped its program by adding 20 new certificates and degrees.

According to the Woodridge Patch, most of the new offerings will be in health, business and technology services. The school's vice president of academic affairs said that the change was spurred by a need to keep up with the demands of students and the changing workforce.

He said that many career paths have emerged in eco-friendly industries. One of the new certificate programs that has been added is a sustainable design track, which focuses on using recycled materials and specialized manufacturing processes in interior design work for clients.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that the number of employment opportunities for interior designers should grow by 19 percent over the next eight years. The bureau says that professionals in this field should have an extensive knowledge of ergonomics and green design because of the public's growing awareness of environmental quality.

The BLS reports that the average salary in this field is $44,950 per year. The highest 10 percent earned more than $82,750 per year in 2008.

Some online schools offer interior design training that caters to working adults who cannot attend a campus-based program.
