A Massachusetts-based college recently launched doctoral (PhD) and bachelor's science (BS) degree programs in mathematics. The school already has a bachelor's of arts degree in math, which is geared toward students who are interested in teaching.

According to the Boston College Chronicle, the BS program aims to prepare scholars for graduate studies in math. The doctorate courses focus on advanced areas in the field that may lead to a career as a mathematician.

The news source reports that six students are enrolled in the PhD program this fall, and department officials would like to see it expand to about 25.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) distinguishes two major areas in the math industry: theoretical and applied. Theoretical experts are responsible for developing new principles of math and linking them to previous rules. Applied mathematicians typically use their knowledge in the field to solve problems in business, government and science.

The BLS reports that candidates for jobs in this field usually are required to have a PhD. The average salary for mathematicians is $95,150 per year.

Students who want to brush up on their math skills before they pursue a degree may consider taking online courses.
