In an effort to save prospective psychologists time and money, many schools are beginning to offer college programs online and on campus that enable students to work toward bachelors and masters degrees at the same time.

For example, a Missouri-based school recently announced the launch of two new programs that will allow psychology students to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in counseling or clinical psychology in five years, the Springfield Business Journal reports. Students who choose to enroll in this program will be required to take classes over the summer and complete several dual-credit courses. Eligible candidates can begin working on their masters-level coursework during their junior year in a bachelors program.

Individuals who choose to enroll in similar programs could improve their job prospects, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that competition for careers in psychology is expected to be keen.

Although some states do certify psychologists who hold masters degree, the majority of professionals in this field will need to complete a doctoral program before they are able to practice independently, according to the BLS.
