Due to global epidemics and the growth of the aging population, the demand for highly trained medical professionals is expected to increase. Consequently, individuals who are seeking job security or a new career may want to consider enrolling in an online college degree program in a healthcare-related field, such as nursing.

To make higher education more feasible for current and prospective nurses, increasingly more online colleges are developing curricula that may be completed around a busy schedule or personal commitments.

Registered nurses who have already completed an associates or diploma program may want to consider completing bachelors-level coursework in order to earn a general nursing degree. Individuals who earn this certification may be promoted to department management or administrative positions.

Meanwhile, nursing professionals who wish to teach or advance in their field can enroll in an online masters program. Graduates of these programs may be able to pursue specialized accreditations or managerial positions at hospitals, insurance companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers or managed care organizations.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the demand for registered nurses is expected to grow by 22 percent over the next eight years.
