Musical theater program competitive upon inception

A college in Connecticut recently added a bachelor's degree in musical theater, and the positive response from students has been strong.

According to the Connecticut Post, the program incorporates acting, dancing, music theory, keyboard competency, auditioning techniques and voice lessons. Other classes in the four-year program include costume design, body movement, theater history and play production.

A co-chair of the school's theater department told the news provider that 30 students tried out for the program, which started in September, but only 11 were accepted. Individuals were required to demonstrate strong singing, dancing and acting skills to be admitted.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), aspiring entertainers who can perform a wide range of musical styles typically have more job opportunities than those who specialize in one area. Many stage performers work in the evening and on weekends, and the job may entail traveling to different venues.

The BLS reports that the average wage in this field is approximately $21 per hour, but the earnings of self-employed musicians depends on the number of freelance jobs they have obtained.

Individuals who wish to gauge their musical aptitude, theory courses are offered by many online colleges.
