Students who are interested in both science and criminal justice may find their niche in forensic science. While there are several campus-based and online schools that offer degree programs that can lead students into intriguing positions in this field, many education professionals are stressing that this industry is much more involved than popular television shows may indicate.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), forensic science technicians collect and analyze evidence in order to solve crimes. Many of these professionals choose an area of specialization, such as DNA analysis or firearm analysis.

Over the next eight years, the demand for forensic science technicians is expected to increase much faster than the average rate for all other occupations. As a result, some campus-based and online colleges are launching initiatives to give prospective degree seekers an exciting and realistic taste of this type of work.

For example, a Texas-based university is hosting a CSI summer camp, which teaches students the real-world investigative techniques that are portrayed on the hit television show of the same name, CBS channel 11 reports.

Over the course of three days, campers learn the industry-defined methods of collecting evidence, crime scene documentation and DNA searching, according to the news source.
