In an uncertain economy, many people head back to school to improve their professional qualifications, and for this reason online colleges have seen particular growth in the last few years.

Moreover, the attractiveness of online schools stems from their convenience for non-traditional students such as busy parents or current professionals who cannot commit to a traditional course schedule or who live far away from campus.

One non-profit, online university has said its enrollment increased by some 30 percent during the last five years and passed the 20,000 enrolled students mark this year.

Distance learning options typically include a variety of fields, such as nursing, education, internet technology and business. They can propel graduates to careers in a variety of sectors, from corporate and nonprofit to government. Moreover, many offer attractive financial aid packages.

Vice president of Western Governors University, Patrick Partridge, says that more than 70 percent of today's college students can be considered non-traditional, based on their family or work status, or the distance that separates them from campus.

Online schools can help these individuals "realize their dream of advancing their education by providing a flexible, affordable way to get an accredited degree online," he added.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in the second quarter of 2010, average salaries of full-time workers with bachelor's degrees were $1,138 a week, compared to just $629 for high school graduates.
