According to a recent survey, the most common bachelor's degrees awarded to New Jersey residents are in the fields of science and engineering.

The New Jersey Star-Ledger reports that approximately 45 percent of the graduates who were surveyed held bachelor's degrees related to science and engineering. The data was compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that most engineering technicians must employ scientific theories to solve a variety of technical problems. Jobs in this field can range from quality control to equipment repair, and many engineering technicians assist scientists in research and development projects.

The BLS projects that employment opportunities in this field will rise by 5 percent over a decade. Engineering technicians are also expected to have strong math and communication skills, the bureau reports.

Individuals interested in this field must also be diligent because some of the work sites may be exposed to hazards from chemicals and equipment. Employees are expected to follow strict procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

If students are considering a career in engineering, online college courses may be a cost-efficient option.
