An online university recently launched two new graduate programs that are geared toward prospective educators.

The school is adding reading literacy as well as library and media as specializations to its master of arts in education program. The literacy concentration aims to instill the most effective teaching methods for reading and writing instruction. The library and media focus grooms students with the skills needed to become a librarian and media specialist.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that job opportunities for librarians will grow by 8 percent over a decade. The bureau also says that 20 states require librarians to have a master's degree in a related field.

According to data compiled by the BLS, the median salary for librarians is $52,530 per year. Compensation varies by the size and location of the library, as well as the individual's experience in the field.

The role of a librarian has evolved as modern technologies have advanced considerably. For those interested in this field, a vast knowledge of new media and the ability to utilize electronic resources are beneficial traits. Online courses can introduce students to the skills they will need to become a librarian.
