As the green movement continues to grow in popularity, many industries are looking to make their practices more eco-friendly. Consequently, many campus-based and online college degree programs are beginning to integrate sustainable teachings into their offerings.

In fact, some schools are even creating new courses of study that cater to the demands of modern businesses. For example, a North Carolina-based school recently announced the launch of a new masters program in civil engineering, the Independent Mail reports.

The 18-month program will teach students to use eco-friendly methods to redesign older infrastructures and create new ones. The curriculum will address a wide variety of subjects, ranging from general engineering to public policy.

These types of programs could help budding engineers thrive in the civil sector, as the demand for qualified professionals in this field is expected to grow in the coming years.

Median earnings for civil engineers in May 2008 were $74,600 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Individuals whose educational qualifications are up-to-date may be able to earn even higher salaries.
