As the demand for highly skilled engineers continues to grow, many campus-based and online colleges are beginning to increase their internet-based offerings to ensure these professionals can earn advanced degrees without quitting their current jobs.

For example, a New Mexico-based schools recently announced they would make required courses for its electrical and computer engineering program available in an online format. Although the syllabi for each class will be the same as the classroom-based versions, students will be able to schedule their coursework around a work schedule.

School officials say that this program was developed specifically for engineers who wish to enhance their educational qualifications but cannot attend campus-based courses due to their professional obligations.

Some online college degree programs may require students to earn credits through campus-based programs, such as technical reporting projects. As a result, these degree seekers will be able to combine what they have learned in their classes in a more practical setting, which could help them learn to translate their new skills into the workforce.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a graduate-level education may be required for engineers who wish to teach in a collegiate setting or obtain research and development positions.
