Despite the difficult job market, there are several fields that are expected to create many new positions in the future. Among these sectors are engineering - which is a notoriously lucrative industry for individuals who have earned a degree from a campus-based or online school - and healthcare, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects will employ more than 3 million new workers over the next eight years.

In response to this expected growth, many brick-and-mortar and online schools are increasing their offerings for students who wish to enter either of these fields. In fact, some institutions are launching courses that can help enrollees gain skills that will lead to success in either industry.

For instance, a Maryland-based school recently created an online degree program in bioengineering. The master's level course of study will teach students to measure and manipulate cells, tissues and integrated systems, according to school officials.

Individuals who complete similar programs may be prepared for more educational opportunities, such as attending medical school. These graduates could also qualify for jobs in various sectors, including chemicals and materials, healthcare, biotechnology, electronics and devices or defense and security.
