As more companies work to make their business practices sustainable, the demand for engineers who have the skills to help these companies become more green is projected to grow. As a result, several campus-based and online schools are launching masters degree programs that can help current and prospective engineers develop marketable skill sets.

For example, a Pennsylvania-based university recently opened the application process for its new masters degree program in sustainable engineering, the Villanovan reports. The 30-credit program will require students to pick a specific track and take elective courses to supplement the core curriculum.

Individuals who choose to enroll in similar programs at campus-based or online schools will learn how to apply sustainable energy, watershed sustainability, environmental sustainability and sustainable infrastructures to their work. They may also study the ways sustainability can be integrated into a company's economics, policies, societal implications and ethics.

The programs could help environmental engineers improve their career prospects and earn higher salaries.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, median earnings for these professionals in May 2008 were $74,020 per year.
