To help individuals who wish to enter the fast-growing counseling field, some online colleges are launching masters programs that can put these professionals on the fast track to a successful career.

For example, one online school recently opened the application process for a masters degree program in marriage, couple and family counseling. Students who are enrolled in similar programs will learn to resolve marriage and family conflicts in regard to divorce, mediation, child-rearing and school issues as well as family violence.

These courses of study may also integrate an evidence-based counseling practice, which could help these professionals combine their clinical and observational skills with industry research in order to determine the best course of treatment for their clients. Students may also be able to choose a concentration, such as forensic counseling or trauma and crisis counseling.

Individuals who complete these masters programs could see improved career prospects, as the demand for counseling professionals is expected to increase by 18 percent over the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In most states, a master's degree is required for licensure in the counseling field.
