Although completing a campus-based or online degree program is a key component of a successful nursing career, some students may worry that higher education will drain their finances. Fortunately, some organizations, such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, are launching programs to help nursing students gain the educational qualifications they need.

The organization recently donated a total of $100,000 to an Illinois-based school, which will use the funds to provide scholarships for students who are enrolled or planning to enroll in its pre-licensure generalist entry masters program in nursing, the River Forest Leaves reports. The program is intended to help students who hold bachelors degrees in other fields earn their nursing license RN and enter the nursing sector easily.

Scholarships worth $10,000 each will be disbursed to students who are members of groups that are underrepresented in the nursing field, including men, African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians.

Similar programs could help students launch careers in a fast-growing field, as government analysts expect that job opportunities for RNs will increase by at least 20 percent over the next eight years.
