Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design
The bachelors in fashion design is a four-year program involving courses in the principals of art designs, product development, business fashion methods, computer-aided design, along with illustration and sketching classes. The bachelors degree program in fashion design gives fashion design experience in both education classes and hands-on fashion applications. Students learn about garment design and construction, computer graphics and illustrations, and fashion marketing techniques. For those desiring to open their own business, it is also helpful to take business courses and learn the concepts of running and operating a small business. Jobs within the fashion industry are highly competitive. Millions of consumers purchase the clothing, accessories, dresses, shoes, and suits designed by fashion designers. Some fashion designers have specific areas of expertise such as casual wear, formal wear, maternity wear, or intimate apparel. Many fashion designers find work as costume designers for performing arts theaters, television, or movie studios. Many of these costume designers have to learn to create designs of a certain time era. There is much more involved in creating a piece of clothing than just making a design. Much research goes into fashion trends, the use of fabric and other materials, and how the clothing will be marketed to consumers. Fashion designers often find jobs for designing firms, clothing manufacturers, or wholesalers, high-end department stores, and specialty boutiques. There is also a growing need for designers for low-cost clothing lines for the average consumer who is looking for affordable clothing choices. There are some fashion designers who also make a living freelancing their skills. These freelancers may open their own design shops and hire out their services. There is a significant amount of travel involved in a fashion design career, traveling to and from fashion shows and visiting with wholesalers and clothing trade shows. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be moderate growth within this industry as demand increases for stylish and affordable clothing. Department and retail stores will continue to be the biggest employers of new fashion designers coming into the industry. The best job opportunities will most likely go to those with a minimum of a bachelors in fashion design. |
